Birth: 14 October 1885 Balmoral, NSW, AustraliaDeath: 1 June 1918 (age 32) France, Killed in Action Cemetery or Memorial: Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension, France Father: Benjamin RYDER (5 August 1857 - 27 June 1899) Mother: Charlotte WIDDOWS (abt 1862 - 24 June 1940) Arthur enlisted 3 March 1916 at Perth, WA. He was living in Perth and gave his occupation as Station Master and his next of kin his mother Mrs C Ryder of Balmoral, Southern Line, NSW. Arthur served in the 28th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Fremantle on the 'Seang Bee' 18 July 1916 and arrived France via England November 1916. Two of Arthur's brothers also served. Stanley Clifford RYDER (Private 170) (b. Balmoral d.Camden1943) served in the 1st Battalion A.I.F. from 1916 and was wounded in action (gunshot wound left arm and shoulder) in France 5 May 1917. He returned to Australia on the 'A64' for discharge due to his wound July 1917. Herbert James RYDER (Private1963A) (b. Balmoral d. Camden 1967) served in the 57th Battalion A.I.F. from 1916. He was wounded in action (gunshot wound arm) in France 19 May 1918. Herbert returned to Australia on the 'Nervasa' April 1919. Arthur's cousin Charles Thomas RYDER (Trooper 431) (b. Cobbitty Paddock) served in the 1st Light Horse Regiment A.I.F and the ANZAC Provost Corps. He was with the first landing at Gallipoli 25 April 1915 and was wounded in action (bomb wound to left side) at Gallipoli 22 July 1915. He was evacuated to Malta and then to England for recuperation. He arrived in Egypt from England February 1917. Charles returned to Australia on the 'Argyllshire' February 1919. Private Arthur Henry RYDER was killed in action in France on 1 June 1918 age 32. |
